Wildland Firefighter (Apprentice)

These positions will be located at a USDA Forest Service Unit. The purpose of the position is wildland fire suppression/management/control as a specialized firefighter on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of specialized tools or equipment. • Duties listed are at full performance grade GW-05 level.
• Serve on a wildland fire crew assigned to an engine, handcrew, or helitack module to suppress the full range of difficulty and complexity of fires.
• Operate and maintain specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.
• Perform all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, and mop-up. Collects fire weather data, fuel and/or soil moisture samples, maps projects, and maintains records.
• Perform and/or lead others in starting pump engines, priming pumps, adjusting engine speeds and pump valves, laying hoses, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments for effective use of water and additives.
