Environmental Protection Specialist

You will serve as a Environmental Protection Specialist with the National Park Service. This position is located in Lassen Volcanic National Park, in the Division of Resource Management. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work for 11 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status will be 4 weeks / 2 pay periods from November to December.

• Major Duties include: Responsible for the preparation, internal review, and the public involvement and review process for assigned environmental compliance documents Responsible for compliance program development and implementation. Evaluates NPS project work for potential environmental effects and ensures compliance with applicable policies and regulations. Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility. Located at the southern extent of the Cascade Range in northern California, the Lassen Volcanic National Park was established as a unit of the national park system in 1916 shortly after a series of highly publicized, dramatic volcanic eruptions of Lassen Peak in 1914 and 1915. Several types of extinct and dormant volcanoes dominate the landscape, as well as active hydrothermal features like steam vents and mud pots. Nearly 79,000 acres of the park were designated as Lassen Volcanic Wilderness in 1972 and contain a wonderful diversity of mixed conifer forests, lakes, streams, alpine fell-fields, and meadows resplendent in summer wildflowers and butterflies. This biodiversity is demonstrated by approximately 300 species of vertebrates, 765 species of plants, and a wide variety of invertebrates. Lassen also protects a robust human history related to how people inhabited, explored, and traveled through this unique landscape. These cultural resources include important stories, artifacts, sites, historic structures, and cultural landscapes. Recreational opportunities abound, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, and hiking, camping, backpacking, fly-fishing, and kayaking in the summer.
