Individual will be responsible for daily tasks associated with the St. Stephen Fish Lift and relevant monitoring studies for American shad, blueback herring, and American eels.  The individual will participate in operational procedures, collection of essential biological data, and will assist with various administrative tasks to ensure project success (e.g., procurement, vehicle maintenance, and equipment inventory).  Significant time will additionally be applied to defining and addressing maintenance priorities of facilities and equipment, data entry and validation, and estimating ages for collected specimen.  Within season operations are extremely time sensitive, may require heavy physical labor at times, can occur under adverse weather conditions, and often extend working hours to early morning, nights, and/or weekends.  Experience in data entry and management, particularly using Microsoft 365 applications, is strongly preferred.  While largely a land-based vocation, several opportunities exist for aiding concurring projects within the Diadromous Fishes section. An associate degree in the technical sciences and one (1) year of experience in wildlife or fisheries work; or a high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries work.
Knowledge of South Carolina's fish, wildlife and marine species, including their habits, habitats and natural requirements.  Strong ability to communicate observations, deficiencies, and conflicts with the supervisor in a timely manner.  Ability to utilize laboratory equipment to estimate otolith and scale ages and computer applications to enter, verify, and organize data collections.  Ability to swim, record data legibly, and be willing to learn how to perform all jobs within this project and fill in for vacancies when appropriate.
