GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 


This position investigates complaints of damage caused by big and trophy game or game birds. Work with landowners and Wildlife Division staff to develop and implement wildlife damage mitigation plans which may include, but are not limited to, the following activities: hazing of wildlife, delivery and installation of exclusionary fencing materials for the protection of stored hay/crops and bee hives, lethal removal of sick and injured wildlife or depredating animals, and capture or chemical immobilization and relocation of wildlife. Assist with all aspects of the Department's Access Yes Program. Provide field support for wildlife management activities. Attend training, represent the agency in public forums, and maintain equipment and Department facilities. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

• Work with landowners and Wildlife Division staff to develop and implement wildlife damage mitigation plans which may include, but are not limited to, the following activities: hazing of wildlife, delivery and installation of exclusionary fencing materials for the protection of stored hay/crops and bee hives, lethal removal of sick and injured wildlife or depredating animals, capture or chemical immobilization and relocation of wildlife.
• Use Department funds to purchase, maintain, and distribute damage supplies and materials.
• Evaluate and determine the amount of qualifying damage caused by big game, trophy game, and game birds on private lands and make recommendations for payment in accordance with Commission Regulations and Department procedures.
• Complete and/or review damage claim investigation reports.
• Carry out the lethal take of wildlife under department-issued lethal take permits.
• Humanely euthanize sick and injured wildlife and be on call to respond to these situations outside of normal business hours.
• Live trap and relocate black bears, mountain lions, and other wildlife.
• Communicate with homeowners and provide information regarding wildlife conflict situations.
• Field dress harvested big game.
• Evaluate, and adopt as appropriate, new technology to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of wildlife damage investigations. Develop and implement methods to improve damage investigations and conflict resolution.
• Assist in the design and implementation of auxiliary license hunts, lethal take permits, and hunter management programs to address damage by big game and game birds.
• Work with regional wildlife personnel to identify Access Yes projects. Make landowner contacts and disseminate information regarding the Department’s Access Yes programs and assist landowners with contract and renewal submissions. Assist regional personnel in signing properties enrolled in the Access Yes program. Contact hunters and conduct field harvest checks on lands enrolled in the Department’s Access Yes program.
• Conduct wildlife population inventories under the direction and guidance of regional wildlife managers. Collect biological samples. Collect wildlife observation data. Assist with wildlife captures for management and research purposes. Assist with wildlife monitoring programs/projects including the deployment and retrieval of GPS collars. Record hunter harvest data in the field and at check stations. 
• Assist regional habitat biologists in the implementation of habitat improvement projects on state, federal, and private lands. Assist with basic data entry and compilation in support of wildlife research and management.
• Other duties may include assisting with emergency elk feeding, wildlife husbandry, gamebird farm assistance, nuisance wildlife mitigation, and professional development training.
• This position will represent the Department at public forums, events and meetings, attend training and maintain equipment and Department facilities.

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Preference may be given to those with a four-year degree in wildlife management, range management, natural resource management, or farm/ranch operations.

Preference may be given to those individuals with experience in firearm proficiency and lethal removal of wildlife.

Preference may be given to those with familiarization and experience in agricultural operations.

Other related training and experience will be evaluated.

KNOWLEDGE: 

• Self-starter able to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
• Excellent communication/ interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of general outdoor skills, especially wildlife identification and life history.
• Ability to learn general concepts of wildlife management and damage mitigation.
• Ability to safely handle firearms and pyrotechnical devices.
• Knowledge of farm and ranch operations and livestock production practices.
• Ability to carry out basic mathematic calculations including conversions and the use of complex formulas.
• Knowledge of Department policies and standard practices.
• Knowledge of state statutes and Wyoming Game & Fish Commission Regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education:Bachelor's Degree (typically in Wildlife Management) Experience:0-3 years progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist I OR Education & Experience Substitution:4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Wildlife Management) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Wildlife Biologist I Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:None

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outside and perform under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to walk in rough, uneven terrain with unstable footing.
• Ability to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays, early mornings, late evenings, and at night.
• Will be required to work alone in the field in a rural setting.
• Travel and overnight stays may be required.
• May require considerable physical labor including working, hiking, and camping in the field for multiple days.
• Overnight travel and camping in remote areas may be required.
• Operation of 4WD vehicles and towing trailers may be required.
