Westervelt manages more than 500,000 acres of forest, and it got started in paper: the South Bend Paper Company opened in South Bend, Indiana, in 1884. The Gulf States Paper name arrived in 1929, the first pine plantation went in at Bibb County, Alabama, in 1956, and the paper name came off in 2006. From Tuscaloosa the company now runs forest resources, wood products, ecological services, and real estate, with operations in New Zealand as well.
Forestry is the center of gravity, on managed timberland that traces back to the pines planted in Bibb County in 1956. Ecological services runs as its own business line, separate from forest resources.
