The State of Alaska is the government behind the Permanent Fund Dividend applications, the Alaska Marine Highway ferries, and the fishing and hunting licenses residents carry, together a fair sketch of how wide its work runs. Its executive departments include Fish and Game, Natural Resources, Environmental Conservation, Corrections, Labor and Workforce Development, Transportation and Public Facilities, Military and Veterans Affairs, and Administration.

One detail on the state's own site says something about its ethos: visitors are greeted in one of the 20 indigenous languages the state formally recognizes, the words, the translation, and a recording so you can hear them said properly. For anyone job hunting, the spread is the point, geographic and occupational both. Health roles sit within the state's Health department and its neighbors; wildlife, habitat, and lands work belongs to Fish and Game and Natural Resources; road, ferry, and facilities jobs run through the transportation side; while the Department of Administration keeps the government itself staffed, paid, and equipped, and Corrections, Public Safety, and Revenue fill in what remains. One employer, reaching every region of the state, hiring for professions most private companies never touch: it runs the ferries, licenses the fisheries, and staffs the prisons, all as one organization.
