Thomas Edison was an early member of this YMCA, and he gave its building on Main Street in Orange its electric lights. Industrialist Samuel Colgate, revivalist Dwight L. Moody, and YMCA professional Sumner F. Dudley convened church leaders on October 15, 1885 to charter it for civic and cultural improvements to the Oranges. Its camp started in 1915 as a two-week experiment, fifteen boys and two donated tents; the Colgate family bought 158 acres in Sussex County for it the next year, and the site now runs to 600 acres.
Fairview Lake YMCA Camps and Conference Center is the outdoor operation, 600 acres in Sussex County that moved into environmental education in the early 1980s. Overnight and day programs for visiting school groups run alongside the summer camp, which means instructors and naturalists on staff, not just camp counselors.
