Hays County serves more than 240,000 residents along Interstate 35 between Austin and San Antonio, from its county seat in San Marcos. Created on March 1, 1848 from the southern part of Travis County, it was named for the Texas Ranger captain Jack Coffee Hays, and its 680 square miles take in Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and Texas State University. The county calls itself among the fastest-growing in Texas, and the corridor it sits on does most of the explaining.

Hays County's outdoor work follows its 680 square miles of Texas Hill Country, parks and open lands around communities like Wimberley where grounds and land management roles come up.
