Freeport-McMoRan careers

Morenci, in Greenlee County, Arizona, is an open-pit copper and molybdenum complex that has been mined continuously since 1939, and before that underground. Freeport-McMoRan owns 72% of it, with two Sumitomo Metal Mining companies holding the rest, and each partner takes its share of production in kind. Morenci came to Freeport with the 2007 acquisition of Phelps Dodge, which had first invested in the area in the 1880s. The company itself was incorporated in Delaware in 1987 and is headquartered in Phoenix, with copper, gold, and molybdenum reserves also at the Grasberg district in Indonesia and at Cerro Verde in South America.

At the end of 2025 Freeport-McMoRan counted about 29,000 employees: 13,900 in the United States, 7,300 in South America, 6,600 in Indonesia, and 1,200 in Europe and elsewhere. Contractors add far more at the mine sites, roughly 27,700 in Indonesia alone and about 24,300 of those at Grasberg. Around 28% of the global employee population works under collective labor agreements, though not in the United States, where non-exempt full-time employees at active sites work directly with management.
